Starcraft 2 Beta

I’m currently a beta tester for Starcraft 2 Beta. Which is where lots of my time would go if I didn’t have a life lol. Initially I wasn’t picked for the first batch of beta testing, that made me sad lol. Then one day I got an email saying that I was selected and boy was I happy, though it took a while for me to download the game with my average internet connection ^^;;. Even worse, I couldn’t play it until after my midterm which was today lol. I’m enjoying the game and learning all the different changes as everyone else is as brand new strategies are coming out because of the new units and buildings.

First off, I must say that I am impressed with the details of the game. Though sadly I can’t enjoy it while I actually play the game lol. This is due to my computer not having the processing power or video card to handle the game on full blast or in the settings its called “Ultimate” ^^;;. Though what’s nice is I can replay my games and I can change my settings to watch it in better detail then change back when I need to play. Though honestly I wouldn’t admire the graphics that much as I try to micro-manage, attack, come up with strategies, and all that while I’m playing lol.

I have played all 3 races, Zerg, Protoss, and Terran and will give a quick impression that I have for the 3.

For the Zerg, they have gotten sneakier lol. The unit called “Roaches” is a new unit and is a great way to get into an enemies base unseen if they do no have sensors around their base (which they usually don’t way making another base). Roaches are able to dig and move while underground so they can’t be seen by the other player which is a great way to sneak into a base or explore a map and I will tell you why next. With the Roach in place, somewhere deserted within a base or just far enough where the enemy can’t see, I can sprout up a Nydus Worm. The Nydus Worm is basically a super fast subway lol. You first build the Nydus building which is a advance building and you put the ground units you want to use inside of it (I think you can put around 20 units) and it doesn’t matter the size as each takes up only one space, even a Ultralisk. Now, from the Nydus building you select the Nydus Worm and you select where on the map to pop up as long as you can see it is not fogged which is where the Roach comes in. With the Roach in a abandoned area, you have enough non-fogged area to select and make the Nydus Worm pop out from the ground (takes about 9 secs) and release all the units and let them wreak havoc on the unsuspecting player. Evil xD. There’s a ton more to talk about for Zerg but that’s my favorite part ^^. In general, I feel the Zerg are less of a “rush” type of race and that you actually want to spend time to develop to take on other players.

Terran’s are once again the middle “race” lol. The Terran’s don’t have much changes in terms of units, I feel some of them are just replacements of units from Starcraft 1, such as the reaper and firebat. The biggest change I feel is the buildings. I think one of bigger changes that I really like is the Command Center. Although its the same Command Center as before, it comes with new changes. One is that it no longer has an attachment for nukes, nukes have their own separate Ghost tower. The Command Center can have 2 attachments to it that becomes part of the Command Center and gives it a whole new name. One is the Planetary Fortress while the other is Orbital Command. The Planetary Fortress is basically a Command Center with a big gun torrent on it that’s pretty powerful when shot though the trade off is that it can’t be moved (Guess it’s the big gun on top of it xD). I personally haven’t used it yet but I probably should for my expansion bases lol. What I like is the Orbital Command. Not only does it give the classic scanner but it comes with a unit dropper that drops a MULE which is a harvester that can mine more than SCV’s though sadly it has a limited lifetime. What I really love is the supply depot attachment you can drop onto existing supply depots to give you more unit’s to make without having to use time and money to make new supply depots as it uses the energy from the Orbital Command, really useful. There is also attachments tech which lets you create more advance units or a reactor which doubles the units you can make. Though sadly you can only attach one or the other. I like to use the Banshee and Viking lol. Still, Terran’s are pretty formidable when used correctly.

Protoss are pretty cool. They are almost the same as before but with new units which I like. The Void Ray is pretty cool, it can dish out a ton of damage but it needs time to build up so I need to bring along backup while they power up their beam of death lol. The Mothership is pretty awesome and a very good battle resource. I used to suck up a bunch of Thor’s that were about to attack my base into null space for a short while which was enough for me to prepare units to take them out. Dark Templar’s are still awesome lol, though sadly there are no more Dark Archon’s and instead you merge 2 Dark Templar’s, 1 Dark Templar and 1 High Templar, or 2 High Templar into a Archon. The Colossus is pretty cool and does a ton of damage but also needs support from not only the ground but air too. So a bunch of Zealots and Pheonix’s are good for defending a Colossus. Lots of backup is needed for Protoss lol.

If you’re playing SC 2 Beta, tell us your experience or leave your profile name and I can challenge you lol.

Here’s a couple of video’s showing the Beta gameplay.

    Congratz for being selected =)
Cant wait for the release, even if I am not a big player, dont have many time for this and kindda prefer playing solo as I suck on those strategic games, but really enjoy them anyway. I have always a preferred side, but not with Starcraft with which I can really enjoy every race particularity. This new game looks really awesome for everything I have seen so far.

@lu-k: Thanks. You should buy the game when it comes out, I know I will :D . I can’t quite remember but I heard it might be in installments for the single player. First Terran then the other races will follow.
